The Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) was enacted by the federal government last August to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 40% by 2030, and it has had the greatest impact in two primary tax areas.

These areas include the Energy Efficient Home Improvement Tax Credit (25C) and the High-Efficiency Electric Home Rebate Program (HEEHRP).

Frequently Asked Questions About Tax Credits

You can claim the energy efficient home improvement credit for enhancements made to your primary residence, which is typically where you live most of the time. To qualify, the home must be in the United States, existing, and not a new construction. Generally, you cannot claim the credit if you are a landlord or property owner who doesn’t reside in the home.

You can claim the credit for qualifying property installed between Jan. 1, 2023, and Jan. 1, 2033.

  • Maximum Annual Credit:
    • $1,200 for energy property costs and certain home improvements (with limits on doors, windows, and audits).
    • $2,000 per year for specific items like heat pumps or biomass stoves.
  • No Lifetime Limit: There’s no cap on how much credit you can claim over time, but it must be within the yearly limits.
  • Nonrefundable Credit: You can’t get back more than what you owe in taxes, and excess credit can’t be carried over to future years.

Focus on Energy Rebates to Enhance Your Home's Efficiency

Offer is valid for eligible equipment and products purchased and installed between January 1 and May 31, 2024. 

Focus on Energy provides rebates and assistance for installing new heating and cooling equipment. This includes options such as: 

By upgrading to efficient equipment, you can expect to reduce fuel consumption by 10% to 30%, enjoy quieter operation, and maintain more consistent temperatures at home. Making multiple upgrades simultaneously can increase your rebates and overall energy savings.

These rebates are in addition to the Energy Star tax credits. 

Smart Thermostats – Up to $50

Natural Gas Furnaces – Up to $550

Natural Gas Boilers – Up to $700

Heat Pumps* – Up to $1,000

*All ducted air source heat pumps and geothermal heat pumps can be dual-fuel heat pumps.

Multifamily Style Equipment – Up to $150

  1. Be a residential customer of a participating utility in Wisconsin.
  2. Be a landlord (not the utility account holder) who paid for equipment installed on a residential customer’s property.

Yes, there are limits for the amount of rebates you can receive through the Focus on Energy program. Rebates are subject to the following limits:

  1. Annual Limit: Rebates are limited to $400,000 per customer per calendar year for all Focus on Energy rebates.

  2. Project Pre-Approval: Projects with expected rebates exceeding $10,000 require pre-approval before initiation or equipment purchase to ensure fund availability.

  3. Single Rebate per Equipment Piece: Focus on Energy will only pay one rebate for each piece of equipment. Rebates claimed on one application cannot be claimed again on another.

  4. Single Entity: Rebates can only be paid to one person or entity, either the resident or landlord, not both.

Ensure to review and adhere to these limits when applying for rebates to maximize your benefits within the program’s guidelines.

To obtain Focus on Energy rebates, follow these steps:

  1. Check Eligibility: Ensure you are a residential customer of a participating utility in Wisconsin or a landlord who paid for eligible equipment in a residential customer’s property.

  2. Purchase and Install Eligible Equipment: Buy and install qualifying energy-efficient equipment between January 1 and May 31, 2024, ensuring it meets all program requirements and efficiency standards.
